Learning networking will lead you to the victim, like for example: Where the attacks going through; Where is the target; What ports are open; LAN or WAN. etc.

Don't forget, if you pass this step it will lead you JAIL unless you're doing a Pen testing. Learn how to spoof your MAC address and IP's ;)

LEARN CRYPTOGRAPHY

Learn Cryptography because now a days, there are no messages, files, websites and etc are not encrypted in the internet so learn how to crack it. Just for example: you have a girlfriend and she's connected to your network (WIFI) you want to know if she is cheating on you, Sniff your network and dump all the traffic and crack it, you'll see if she is cheating on you :)
